The Matias Tactile Pro Keyboard is built from the same premium keyswitch technology that Apple used in its original Apple Extended Keyboard, widely viewed as the best keyboard Apple ever made.
Mac users who crave the feel of Apple’s legendary Extended and Extended II keyboards will love the Tactile Pro. Unlike other keyboards made today, each key is built on an individual Alps Mechanical Switch. They feel better, and you’ll type faster.
This latest Tactile Pro model brings tighter integration with Mac OS X. Just like an Apple keyboard, the Tactile Pro’s function keys now let you control screen brightness, volume, iTunes, and more.
There’s even an Fn key, that lets you momentarily change the function keys back to their traditional duties, when you need them.
The Tactile Pro makes it easy to find ™ € £ ¥ © and other hard to remember symbols – they’re all printed right on the keys. Simply hold down the Option key for the bottom-right characters, or Shift-Option for the top-right characters.
All those symbols are handy, but what happens when they wear off? They won’t. They’re laser etched – burned into the keys with a laser – so they’ll never wear off.
The latest trend in keyboards is to have very flat & wide keys, with little or no space between them. You see this a lot on laptops and netbooks. While they look great, they can also be a little tricky to type on. The flatness makes it very easy to slide out of home row and lose your bearings.
The Tactile Pro bucks this trend. It has traditional sculpted keytops, curved to fit your fingertips, and keep you from sliding out of home position.
For quickly attaching USB peripherals, nothing beats the convenience of an in-keyboard USB hub. No more reaching through the tangle of wires behind your computer to download photos from your digital camera. Just plug it into the keyboard and you’re ready to go. Works great with MP3 players, keyring hard drives, joysticks, and mice too. It won’t charge your iPod/iPhone, but for syncing it’s perfect.
Most keyboards allow only a certain number of keys to be pressed at once, and often cannot keep up with very fast typists. The result is called ghosting – letters missing from what you actually typed, or additional letters that you didn’t type.
The Tactile Pro has special Anti-Ghosting Circuitry (also called n-key rollover) to eliminate these problems. You can type as fast as you’re able; the Tactile Pro will keep up.

The Matias Tactile Pro for Mac keyboard is such a joy to use. I’ve had mine for nearly five years, and it still functions as expected. The ALPS keys are very tactile and there is little doubt when a key press has registered. I have used it alongside an Apple Extended Keyboard and an Apple Extended Keyboard II, and while the switches feel a bit different to those (not least because of the age of the Apple keyboards), they’re still similar in many ways to the feel of those classic keyboards. In fact, a few keys on the old AEK were sticky and I was able to replace them with Matias ALPS switches! Anyway, I highly recommend this keyboard – so much so, I actually purchased a second one as a backup in case their production is ever ended.

My Matias Tactile Pro (v.4) keyboard was robustly packaged by The Keyboard Company.
I removed the outer packaging and noticed that someone had already opened the Matias keyboard box. (I wondered if someone at TKC had checked the integrity of my keyboard before shipping it.)
I was disappointed to discover that the sticky white foam pads that are positioned on the underside of the keyboard (for stability) had detached, floating around the inner packaging. (I actually assumed that they were part of the internal packaging as I was unwrapping the keyboard. It was only when I examined the underside of the keyboard that I realised that those sticky packaging bits were actually a part of the keyboard. Fortunately, I had kept them and quickly reattached them to the underside of the keyboard.
Matias considerately provide two varying length USB Type-B to Type-A connecting cables; but I had difficulty in attaching the micro Type-B end of the shorter cable to the port on the back of the keyboard. It was also difficult to recognise the way I needed to insert the cable (as its not a symmetrical design).
The keyboards plastic moulding was very closely cut around the micro Type-B port on the back of the keyboard. I had quite a job connecting the cable to the port. (I doubted my eyesight and assumed that I was trying to force the cable in upside down I had to carefully check the port connection to see that I was not trying to force the cable in upside-down.)
Overall, Im very pleased with the build quality of this keyboard. Its a noticeable step up in quality from my Unicomp (Ultra Classic IBM-style keyboard, Black, USB).
The three USB Type-A ports on the back of the keyboard are a wonderful addition. (I realise that this unpowered USB hub feature has been around in keyboard tech for years, but this is my first experience of it very handy!)
Ive used this keyboard with a 2017 MacBook Pro (using a USB Type-A to Thunderbolt dongle) and it worked perfectly. It also works perfectly with my 2019 iMac.
I took a bit of a gamble on ordering this keyboard because I hadnt used the classic Apple Extended keyboard (with ALPS switch tech) before. Fortunately, that gamble has paid off handsomely because its hands-down the most satisfying tactile feedback that Ive experienced from a computer keyboard.
(The only thing that I find a little disconcerting are some of the reviews for this keyboard on this website that question the keyboards durability; but time will tell on that issue.)
I am very impressed by the feel of the mechanical ALPS-switch. I still have the highest regard for Unicomps Buckling-Spring mechanism within the Ultra Classic; but my Matias Tactile Pro has become the new gold standard for me.
Finally, Im also impressed by the quality of TKC customer service. They will be my first stop on all future keyboard purchases.

Looks good, feels good to type on … unfortunately mine completely died less than an hour after receiving it!
Customer service excellent as expected, Keyboard Co were happy to replace it with a different type.

Within 3 days I had my keyboard at home. Very fast in my opinion considering it had to be shipped from the UK. Also very quick and friendly response from Helen to my E-mails. And it is a Fantastic keyboard, all these modern flat, minimal keyboards can’t by far compete to a real one as this Matias Tactile Pro for Mac.

That keyboard is a really nice member of the clicky family. I have to get used to the clicky switches again, coming from black Cherry switches. But the Matias is solid, well crafted, very useful and has all those characters printed on the keycaps. Even the rarer ones. I like it!

Happily typing away. Clickety-clack as in the old days, very responsive and not too loud. Now I’m sure when writing text and filling passwords fields. Keyboard layout is properly styled, italics from former models are gone and extra markings are not obtrusive. Compared to flat aluminum Mac keyboards this one is a bit pricier but in the long run will prove cheaper because these Alps inspired switches have a very long life. If you’re sitting at your Mac for most of the day, this is a must.

Best mechanical keyboard out there for Apple computers. Resembles the original Apple Extended Keyboard and has its spirit.

Superb keyboard. It takes me back decades to the time when this sort of quality was what you expected.

These tend to last me about three years.
It’s not a great length of time, but my eyesight is such that I much prefer white keys with a black legend.
The BIG plus is it is a 3 port USB hub as well, so my wireless mouse and a memory stick containing reference data can move from computer to computer via a USBKVM switch as my keyboard does.
Just remember to eject the stick first, before moving, on a Mac. Win 10 does not seem to object as much, but OS X gets annoyed if you don’t.

Not super impressed with this, developed a fault in less than a year. And mind you, I’m not a overly hard typer. Disappointing.

What an awesome keyboard! Old school in the best sense of the word. May be a little noisy for some, but I do enjoy this sound of the 90s. Most important: looks a much more durable keyboard than this fancy flat ones. Recommended!

The Matias is a quality keyboard that compares well against my excellent IBM Model M keyboard I use on my PC. The model M may be 20+ years old but it is the gold standard of keyboards. I now have a proper keyboard for my Macbook Pro!
Tip: Users of both Windows and Mac should consider the Mac utility ‘Karabiner’, which supports key remapping – including making the Mac Home, End, PgUp, PgDn keys behave like they do on Windows.
