UK Matias Tactile Pro for Mac

Unhappy with the feel of other keyboards, I took a chance with the Matias Tactile Pro. Really glad I did - love the typing experience, more 'click' than other mechanical keyboards, more assertive than anything made by Apple. The built-in USB hub is a nice bonus, plus you don't miss out on the Magic Keyboard's MacOS-specific function keys. I also think it looks great.

I only wish they offered the compact version with UK layout.

A nice spring action to the keys, reminiscent of a telex machine. Better than the dead feel of modern alternatives. Too early to award full marks, but the signs are favourable.

The Matias Tactile Pro is unique among mechanical keyboards in that it uses an updated version of the ALPS switches, as opposed to the rest of them that are based on the Cherry switches. The fact that Matias spend the effort and engineering resource to reverse engineer and improve the ALPS switch in my mind puts them apart from everyone else.

It is very loud and very mechanical, so if tactility is your thing, its the best.

They are very, very durable, I have another unit bought in 2015 and after 6 years of constant use it works as good as ever and the laser etched keys have not deteriorated at all.

Ordering through the keyboard company was a pleasure, my email queries were answered promptly and was kept informed, could not have asked for a better service.

Painless process from order to door. Arrived on-time and in a secure package. As for the keyboard itself, other than a strange decision on the cord placement, the product is one of the best keyboards I have ever used. The ALPS reborn!

My Matias Tactile Pro (v.4) keyboard was robustly packaged by The Keyboard Company.

I removed the outer packaging and noticed that someone had already opened the Matias keyboard box. (I wondered if someone at TKC had checked the integrity of my keyboard before shipping it.)

I was disappointed to discover that the sticky white foam pads that are positioned on the underside of the keyboard (for stability) had detached, floating around the inner packaging. (I actually assumed that they were part of the internal packaging as I was unwrapping the keyboard. It was only when I examined the underside of the keyboard that I realised that those sticky packaging bits were actually a part of the keyboard. Fortunately, I had kept them and quickly reattached them to the underside of the keyboard.

Matias considerately provide two varying length USB Type-B to Type-A connecting cables; but I had difficulty in attaching the micro Type-B end of the shorter cable to the port on the back of the keyboard. It was also difficult to recognise the way I needed to insert the cable (as its not a symmetrical design).

The keyboards plastic moulding was very closely cut around the micro Type-B port on the back of the keyboard. I had quite a job connecting the cable to the port. (I doubted my eyesight and assumed that I was trying to force the cable in upside down I had to carefully check the port connection to see that I was not trying to force the cable in upside-down.)

Overall, Im very pleased with the build quality of this keyboard. Its a noticeable step up in quality from my Unicomp (Ultra Classic IBM-style keyboard, Black, USB).

The three USB Type-A ports on the back of the keyboard are a wonderful addition. (I realise that this unpowered USB hub feature has been around in keyboard tech for years, but this is my first experience of it very handy!)

Ive used this keyboard with a 2017 MacBook Pro (using a USB Type-A to Thunderbolt dongle) and it worked perfectly. It also works perfectly with my 2019 iMac.

I took a bit of a gamble on ordering this keyboard because I hadnt used the classic Apple Extended keyboard (with ALPS switch tech) before. Fortunately, that gamble has paid off handsomely because its hands-down the most satisfying tactile feedback that Ive experienced from a computer keyboard.

(The only thing that I find a little disconcerting are some of the reviews for this keyboard on this website that question the keyboards durability; but time will tell on that issue.)

I am very impressed by the feel of the mechanical ALPS-switch. I still have the highest regard for Unicomps Buckling-Spring mechanism within the Ultra Classic; but my Matias Tactile Pro has become the new gold standard for me.

Finally, Im also impressed by the quality of TKC customer service. They will be my first stop on all future keyboard purchases.

This has been an absolute pleasure to type on. It feels pretty damn durable too.

For people trained to type on enormous old typewriters, these are just the best. You can go as fast as you need, and the sound is satisfyingly reassuring. The service from The Keyboard Company is excellent, both on line and in person. Thank you.

Provided you dont mind the noise (I love it!) these are fantastic keyboards. An absolute joy to use.

This is an excellent keyboard for the Mac. Definitely an older type, but no worse for that. Much more feel than the modern low profile keyboards. Also, excellent service - rapid delivery, well packed. No complaints at all. Highly recommended.

I use these on all of my machines. They are mechanically very sound, though I have found the paint can wear off the keys.

Shipped quickly. Excellent product. Great for touch typing. Makes doing work tolerable, even pleasant. Highlights how dispiriting it is to have to use macbook's integral flat keyboard when working remotely.

Looks good, feels good to type on ... unfortunately mine completely died less than an hour after receiving it!
Customer service excellent as expected, Keyboard Co were happy to replace it with a different type.

Within 3 days I had my keyboard at home. Very fast in my opinion considering it had to be shipped from the UK. Also very quick and friendly response from Helen to my E-mails. And it is a Fantastic keyboard, all these modern flat, minimal keyboards can't by far compete to a real one as this Matias Tactile Pro for Mac.

This is a great mechanical keyboard that really compares well with the classic Apple Extended II. I use it on my Mac and works perfectly. Great service from the Keyboard Company.

Superb keyboard. It takes me back decades to the time when this sort of quality was what you expected.

These tend to last me about three years.
It's not a great length of time, but my eyesight is such that I much prefer white keys with a black legend.
The BIG plus is it is a 3 port USB hub as well, so my wireless mouse and a memory stick containing reference data can move from computer to computer via a USBKVM switch as my keyboard does.
Just remember to eject the stick first, before moving, on a Mac. Win 10 does not seem to object as much, but OS X gets annoyed if you don't.

Not super impressed with this, developed a fault in less than a year. And mind you, I'm not a overly hard typer. Disappointing.

What an awesome keyboard! Old school in the best sense of the word. May be a little noisy for some, but I do enjoy this sound of the 90s. Most important: looks a much more durable keyboard than this fancy flat ones. Recommended!

The Matias is a quality keyboard that compares well against my excellent IBM Model M keyboard I use on my PC. The model M may be 20+ years old but it is the gold standard of keyboards. I now have a proper keyboard for my Macbook Pro!

Tip: Users of both Windows and Mac should consider the Mac utility 'Karabiner', which supports key remapping - including making the Mac Home, End, PgUp, PgDn keys behave like they do on Windows.
